Folding Door Options For Closets

Folding Door Options for Closets

A closet door may be a small detail in a home, but it can add or detract from a room's character and style. Installing a folding door on a closet can make the closet more accessible. If you already have a folding closet door, updating it is an inexpensive way to make the entire room look fresh. Does this Spark an idea?

Accordion

An accordion door is a cheap, yet durable, folding door option for residential or commercial spaces. Accordion doors are usually made of a single sheet of vinyl laminate, molded to create an accordion look, or hardwood veneer panels. Both of these materials are inexpensive and lightweight. The accordion closet door is a single door option that opens from whichever side you choose, but is not a door type that opens from the middle. Accordion doors are suspended from a track at the top of the closet, so there is no bottom track to install. Accordion doors are favored for a closet where a wide entrance is desired, since this door type folds up very small because the panels are thin.

Bifold

A bifold door is one that consists of two panels that fold together when the door slides open. A bifold door panel is usually 12 to 18 inches wide. Thus, depending on the closet door frame's width, install either one bifold door that opens from a side or two bifold doors that open from the center. This door type requires a bifold-specific track at the top and bottom of the closet door frame. To keep this door type opening easily on the tracks, frequently oil and grease the hinges. Bifold doors are made in many different styles to fit your home.

Multi-fold

A multi-fold door is similar to a bifold door but is used to cover door frames that are too large for a bifold system. This door type can be made in any length, as long as it consists of an even number of panels. Like a bifold door, a single multi-fold door can cover a door frame, opening from one end to the other, or consist of two multi-fold doors that slide from the middle to each end. This door type is also available in a variety of styles, designs and materials.
