Make The Most Of A Deep Closet

Using vertical space wisely will make the most of your closet's space.

A deep closet is only beneficial if you know organize it well. A deep closet can obviously hold more than a smaller one, but much of the space will go to waste without a careful plan. As you design your dream closet, aim to keep items easily accessible. Also strive to designate spaces for specific types of items, instead of haphazardly jamming everything in together. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Install tall sets of shelves where they won't interfere with clothes hanging on the clothing rack. For instance, place shelves to the right of the rack. If the clothing rack extends across the whole closet, place shelves to the right and left of the rack, juxtaposed with the rack, if space allows. Use the shelves like a dresser, to store clothes that won't wrinkle easily, and other items such as sheets. Choose open-air shelves rather than pull-out drawers, though, so you can see your clothes. If you have a small bedroom, you may no longer need a freestanding dresser. Install a shelf above the clothing rack if the closet doesn't have one there already.

2. Use baskets to store goods on the shelf above the clothing rack. Baskets make it much easier to pull these items out without sorting through everything. Choose square baskets instead of rounded ones so they fit snugly side by side. Give each basket a specific purpose -- you can even label them. One might hold crafting supplies while another holds winter hats and gloves, for instance. Use the baskets for items you don't need every day, such as out-of-season clothes.

3. Place cubbies, bins or a shoe rack under the clothing rack so you don't miss out on using precious vertical space. Place shoes in the cubbies, or use the shoe rack. If you use bins and cubbies, designate a purpose for each separate space, such as beauty supplies or instruction manuals.

4. Install shelf dividers on the shelves to separate the spaces. This will keep items from slumping into neighboring spaces.

5. Place a laundry bin on the floor of the closet, if you don't have another convenient storage space for laundry. The bin is easy to slide out when you need to access other items, and your laundry is ready to carry.

6. Organize your clothes first by style, then by color, then by length of sleeve, skirt or leg. This system allows you to visually process what you have quickly, so you can coordinate an outfit in moments.
