Back Up A Mac To Acer Aspire Storage

The Acer Aspire EasyStore is a home network attached storage solution that runs Windows Home Server. The EasyStore is capable of holding up to four hot-swappable hard drives, depending on the model. Macintosh computers running Mac OS X version 10.5 and later use a native program called Time Machine to perform backups of the Mac. You can create a sparse disk image that resides on the Acer Aspire storage device to be used with Time Machine to back up the Mac.

Instructions

1. Open the "Terminal" program in the "Utilities" folder.

2. Type "defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1" without quotes, and then press "Return."

3. Open the "Disk Utility" program in the "Utilities" folder.

4. Click the "File" menu. Click "New," and then click "Blank Disk Image."

5. Enter the filename in the "Save As" box in the format "computername_ethernet-mac." For example, "somebodys-MacBook_3a12ab33cde354" using the computer's name and Ethernet MAC address. You can find the computer name by clicking the "System Preferences" icon in the dock, then click "Sharing." You can find the Ethernet MAC address by clicking the "System Preferences" icon in the dock, then clicking "Network." Click "Ethernet," and then click "Advanced." Click the "Ethernet" tab to view the MAC address, which is labelled as "Ethernet ID."

7. Click to change the "Image Format" setting to "sparse disk image."

8. Click the "Size" drop-down list and choose a size for the disk image that is larger than the capacity of your hard drive, and then click "Create."

10. Click the "Finder" icon in the dock.

11. Click the "Go" menu at the top of the screen, and then click "Network."

12. Double-click the Acer Aspire storage device, and then double-click a file share to mount it.

13. Drag the disk image file to the mounted file share.

14. Click the "System Preferences" icon in the dock, and then click "Time Machine."

15. Click "Select Disk," and then click the mounted file share.
