Develop Your Own Closet Organizing System

Keep your bedroom from turning into a pile of clothes.

Closet organization doesn't need to cost you a fortune and can be done with the average size closet. As much as you may want an entire room devoted to your wardrobe, your living situation may not allow that dream. With a few inexpensive items you can transform even a small apartment closet into a functional system that could save you time and a headache on a busy morning. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Separate your clothes in three categories: long-term storage, short-term storage and immediate use. This will free up space in a smaller closet. Long-term storage includes formal wear and maternity clothes. Short-term storage includes seasonal items or pieces that aren't currently fitting. Immediate use is what you are wearing now.

2. Store your long-term items in clear plastic bins and keep in them your garage or storage space. Place short-term storage in clear plastic bins. These will stay in the closet for accessibility.

3. Replace any wire hangers with plastic or wood, as these will help maintain the shape of your clothes. Sort and hang your clothes in sections: sweaters, jackets, long- to short-sleeve shirts, dresses, skirts and pants.

4. Maximize vertical space by adding a double-hanging rod. These have two ends that slip over the top of the existing rod. These are ideal for women's shirts, which are usually shorter in length than men's.

5. Keep your shoes accessible and out of the chaos by hanging a canvas shoe hanger from the lower rod. Clear shoe boxes with a pull-out feature work well for men's shoes and are stackable. With the closet floor cleared of clutter, these should fit on his side.

6. Hang accessories on a belt and tie hanger. This hangs directly from the existing rod. Place it in the middle as a divider between closet sides if sharing.

7. Attach an adjustable purse hanger to the back of a reach-in closet door. This is stretchy like a bungee cord with several purse hooks, with bottom clasps that grab the top and bottom of the door. If you have sliding doors, consider attaching it to the back of your bedroom door.

8. Stack sweaters on the top shelf of the closet and leave enough space for the plastic bins.

9. Place the short-term storage bins on the top shelf of the closet and stack if necessary.
