Refininsh An Oak Entertainment Unit

Oak television stands can be refinished for a brand new appearance.

Solid oak entertainment units are an extremely reliable option for your family room or living room. Over time, these units can become nicked and scratched to the point where they are no longer aesthetically pleasing. However, you can restore the beauty of the entertainment unit by refinishing the surface. In less than a day you can make your oak entertainment unit look as if it is brand new.

Instructions

1. Remove handles, doors and hinges from the entertainment unit using a Phillips-head screwdriver. Set aside for re-installation.

2. Use a palm sander loaded with 120-grit sandpaper to carefully remove the polyurethane finish from the entertainment unit. Continue sanding the surface until the stain and polyurethane is remove.

3. Sand the wood doors using the 120-grit sandpaper to completely remove the finish.

4. Sand the doors and the other surfaces of the unit with fine 220-grit sandpaper. This will create a very smooth surface for staining.

5. Wipe the surfaces clean with a damp rag. Remove all dust caused by the sanding process. Allow the unit to dry completely.

6. Stir the wood stain with a paint stick carefully and apply a coat of stain to the surfaces using a stain cloth. Wear rubber gloves to protect your hands and work in a well-ventilated area.

7. Wait about five minutes, then wipe the excess stain off the wood using clean rags. Allow the the stain to dry thoroughly, and apply a second coat if needed. Allow that coat to dry thoroughly.

8. Stir the can of polyurethane carefully, and apply a thin layer over the entire surface of the oak entertainment unit, including the doors. Use a foam paint brush to coat the surface evenly. Allow the polyurethane to dry thoroughly.

9. Apply a second coat of polyurethane, and use the foam brush to work the polyurethane into curves and crevices along the surface. Allow the polyurethane to dry thoroughly.

10. Reattach the handles, hinges and doors to the unit using the Phillips-head screwdriver.
