Remodel Ideas For A Small House

You can make your home especially appealing even if your space is particularly small.

Remodeling a home that has limited space is challenging, but you can employ plenty of tricks to make your rooms look larger and more appealing. Changing the look of some of the room's main features, as well as adding some furniture pieces, will make your remodeling project much more rewarding. Does this Spark an idea?

Add Shelves

If you don't have lots of storage space in your home, add shelves to the walls of your bedroom or living room to eliminate the need for a large chest of drawers or entertainment center in the space and to make the room appear more open. Measure the wall on which you want to add the shelves, and sketch a few ideas on paper with a pencil until you come up with an idea you like; or go through this process with a contractor. Find the studs in the wall before building your shelves so that you'll know which parts of the wall contain beams that are strong enough to hold the weight of your new shelves. Add some showcase lights to the shelves to highlight some of your favorite decorative items and add more depth to the room.

Change the Paint Color

Use paint for an affordable way to remodel your small home so that the rooms appear more spacious. Color can also evoke a certain mood or feeling; for instance, red represents energy and movement and is ideal for a playroom. However, the color yellow signifies intellect and is a good choice for the reading room. Choose a color for the wall trim that is lighter than the wall color to give the illusion of a room that is wider in overall space, and use white paint for the trim and molding.

Or select a focal point for the room, such as a wall with a fireplace, and paint this wall a rich hue, such as amber or burgundy. Select lighter shades for the other three walls so that the room is more inviting and doesn't seemed boxed in. Brush over the wall with the darkest color of a coat of clear satin polyurethane so that the color is not so overwhelming.

Rework Cabinet and Appliance Space

Install cabinets made of white or lightly colored to make the kitchen look bigger and more appealing. If possible, remove the doors from your top kitchen cabinets to showcase your most attractive dishes and cookware, which automatically tricks the eye into thinking the kitchen space is larger. Add display lights to the cabinets to showcase the kitchen utensils of your choice and to give the cabinets more depth. Of course, purchasing smaller appliances, or installing a countertop stove will free up more space in the kitchen to give the space an especially modern feel.
