Paint Modular Cube Storage System

Most modular cube storage systems are made of wood veneer or laminate, making them somewhat difficult to paint because the surface is so slick. It can be done, however, with great results. If you are tired of the color of your cube storage system, give it new life with a little paint. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Place the modular storage system on top of a drop cloth on a flat surface. Remove the doors and drawers. Unscrew knobs and handles and set aside.

2. Use medium grit sandpaper to create a rough texture on the surface of the furniture. A little texture will allow the primer to adhere to the slick surface.

3. Use a mild cleanser to thoroughly wipe down the surface of the storage system. Completely remove all dust and grease.

4. Roll primer onto the storage system using a smooth foam roller. Foam rollers are great for furniture, especially laminate and veneer furniture, because they apply a thin coat of paint or primer with no brush strokes. Use a paint brush for any areas you can't reach with the roller.

5. Paint the modular storage system using the same technique you used for applying the primer. Multiple thin coats of paint will be more durable than one thick coat. Allow paint to dry completely.

6. Use a brush or roller to coat your storage system with polyurethane. This layer will protect your furniture from nicks and scratches. Replace doors, drawers and pulls. Allow polyurethane to cure for up to a week before heavy use.
