Sizing A Walk In Closet

If you are building a new home and need some guidelines for sizing the walk in closet, bear a few things in mind. This closet is meant to hold clothing as well as special items like camping gear, sports equipment and boxed items. So, the size needs to reflect the items you plan on storing inside. These guidelines help to get you started, the rest is up to you. Always balance room space with storage space for the best possible fit during your project. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the length and width of the room using a tape measure. Write down the measurements on a piece of graph paper with a pencil.

2. Draw the room on the piece of graph paper following the scale one square equals six inches, or one square equals one foot for larger rooms. To draw to a scale of one square equals six inches, for every foot of room length or width, draw a line that extends two squares on the graph paper.

3. Measure your furniture with a tape measure and write down the measurements. Draw the furniture into the room's space on your paper leaving room to one side for the walk in closet.

4. Measure the items you intend to store in the walk in closet with a tape measure. Measure the closet rack space needed for your clothes with a tape measure or use the general calculation of one piece of clothing per inch of closet rod space to figure out how much closet rod space you will need.

5. Draw the walk in closet into the room on the graph paper to the size you predetermined, accounting for your shelving space for non-clothes objects and closet rod space for clothing, in the space left over after the furniture is drawn in the room.

6. Adjust the length or width of the closet to your needs as necessary within the room available on the graph paper. Include extra room for storing items you may not have yet to allow for expansion.
