Fix A Bowing Closet Rack

Fix bowing closet racks to properly support a load.

Perhaps there are too many clothes in your closet, and you have a bowing closet rack to prove it. Short of replacing a sagging rack, there are a couple of quick remedies. The majority of the time on the project will be spent removing the clothes from the rack and replacing them. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Reinforce a hollow, metal rack with a wooden dowel. Remove all clothes from the rack. Use a screwdriver to loosen the rack from the wall. Insert a wooden dowel, at least 1/4 of an inch shorter than the rack. Reattach the rack to the wall.

2. Support a bowing wooden or plastic closet rack with a wooden closet pole. Take all clothes off the rack. Measure the height of the closet rod. Be sure to measure in the area where the rack does not sag.

3. Drill a hole through a 1 3/8-inch wooden closet pole with an electric drill and a 1-inch spade bit. Drill the hole at area that matches the proper height of the closet rod.

4. Cut through the center of the hole with a saw; this will create a notch on which to rest the closet rod. Position the wooden pole into place.
