Build Your Own Mudroom Storage

A mudroom is the one spot in the house with the ability to set the mood for the entire day. A place to grab your coat on the way out and a place to throw your keys at the end of the day, the mudroom is where it all happens. The key to keeping it all together is to find storage solutions that fit your needs and your budget. One option is to hire a contractor to design and construct a storage unit. Another option is to roll up your sleeves and build it yourself. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure and draw a picture of the available mudroom space. Take into consideration a door that may open up into the mudroom. Determine and make a list of your mudroom storage needs. How many lockers to you need? What else do you want to store in the mudroom? Draw a picture of what you hope to accomplish.

2. Go to the local hardware store to find a laminated closet organizer, such as ClosetMaid. Purchase one closet organizer (typically 15 inches by 84 inches) for each locker you need in the mudroom. Refer to the mudroom picture from step one and determine if there is space left for more storage. If room allows, piece together a combination of 24-inch and 15-inch width closet organizers to fit the space. Purchase enough beadboard to span the length and height of the closet organizers when they are placed together side by side.

3. Based on your mudroom needs, select drawers, cabinet doors and shelf add-ons to go with the additional closet organizers.

4. Gently remove the workspace baseboard using a pry bar. Attach the beadboard to the wall with wood glue and paint it. Assemble the closet organizers according to the manufacturer's instructions. Piece together the organizers into the desired configuration. Attach the organizers to the wall using the L-brackets provided and to each other with screws.

5. Cut the fluted molding and glue it to the seams between each closet organizer. Paint or stain it to match the units. If necessary, cut the baseboard and reattach to the wall at the ends of the mudroom storage area.

6. Purchase baskets to fill in some of the storage area shelves to keep clutter at bay and proved a decorative flair to the new mudroom space.
