Stop Mold In A Basement Closet

Closet mold can be tough to tackle.

Basement closets can be the ideal living environment for mold--they're moist, dark and poorly ventilated. The problem gets worse if the closet is used for long-term storage and is, therefore, rarely opened. Removing and preventing mold growth in a basement closet is not difficult but requires some regular maintenance to keep the closet dry, light, and well ventilated. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Clean the closet often using a clean cloth and a mild solution of detergent and water. A clean closet is less likely to be a home to mold.

2. Disinfect areas that had visible mold growth with a solution of 1 cup of bleach and 1 gallon of water. Wipe the solution over the closet with a cloth and let it dry naturally to stop mold formation.

3. Keep the closet door open whenever possible. The more the air inside the basement closet circulates, the less chance mold will have to thrive.

4. Run a dehumidifier near the closet after the closet is clean. Continue running the dehumidifier for a few hours a day, with the closet door open. Mold will not thrive in a dry area.

5. Turn on the light inside the closet for a few hours a day. Mold grows better in a consistently dark environment.
