Refinishing the cabinet gives it a new look.
A small cabinet adds storage opportunities to almost any room in the house. Whether you salvaged a cabinet from a kitchen remodel, found a bargain at an auction or simply want to remodel an existing cabinet in your home, the renovation makes the cabinet more attractive and functional. The extent of the cabinet makeover depends on its current condition and use, as well as how you intend to use the unit. Decide what you want to store in the cabinet and how you want it to look before beginning. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Check the storage cabinet for stability and structural integrity. Shake the cabinet to ensure it's sturdy, and look at individual shelves and doors to make sure they're stable and functional. Fix any damage or instability in the cabinet.
2. Sand the surfaces of the storage cabinet. Wipe away the dust left behind from sanding with a soft cloth.
3. Prime and paint the cabinet, both inside and outside. Apply one coat of primer and two or three coats of paint for a smooth finish. Choose a paint color based on the rest of the room's decor.
4. Add dividers to the shelves if you plan to store smaller items inside. Cut boards to fit vertically between the shelves as dividers. Screw or nail the boards into place.
5. Replace the cabinet's door if the existing one doesn't function properly. Look for premade cabinet doors at a home improvement store that will fit the cabinet's opening.
6. Replace the hardware on the cabinet door, even if you don't replace the actual door. The new hardware helps the door open and close better while giving the cabinet a fresh look.
