Built in shelving can help keep a larger basement storage space clean.
If you are turning your basement into usable living space and are using it to create a den or another bedroom, you can't use the whole thing as a storage unit. That doesn't mean that you have to sacrifice all the storage space. Instead, you'll just want to make plenty of closets or make a separate closet "room" apart from the rest of the space. Does this Spark an idea?
Extra Large Closet
Make an extra large closet in your basement, more than 10 feet by 10 feet. A larger closet can allow rows of items to be stored. Built-in shelving can make sure that you are able to get the most out of your space, from floor to ceiling. Be sure to install good lighting in the closet, as the dimmer the closet is, the harder items will be to retrieve.
Dampness Protection
Install a dehumidifier in the closet to make sure that the natural dampness of the space is controlled. This will help ensure that no mold or mildew is able to grow. In addition, try clear, plastic storage bins instead of regular cardboard boxes to store all of your items. All the items inside each bin will be protected from moisture.
Wine Closet
Wine is better when stored in the damp coolness of a basement space. If you have a larger wine collection, store it in a basement closet specifically reserved for wine. If your wine collection isn't large enough to warrant a walk-in closet space, create a very shallow closet, only about 2 feet deep, with a sliding door to separate it from the rest of the basement space.
