Mildew is the byproduct of mold that presents as a black and white film. Besides being unsightly, mildew has a dreadful smell and can even be linked to respiratory ailments. Mildew thrives in humid climates and is usually found in dark, damp locations. Mold and mildew like to form on surfaces that boast the right environment, such as furniture drawers. Getting rid of mildew is a nasty chore, so preventive measures are important if you live in a humid climate in which mold and mildew are a problem. Instructions
1. Set a box of baking soda in the drawer to help absorb moisture.
2. Place three to four charcoal briquettes in the drawer. They will absorb moisture in the air and turn white as they do. Check the briquettes often and replace them with fresh ones when they are completely white.
3. Line the drawer with newspaper to absorb moisture and keep mildew from adhering to the drawer. Replace the newspaper on a weekly basis.
4. Take the drawers outside and allow them to air out in the sunshine. Sunlight is great for killing mold spores.
5. Wipe out the drawer on a weekly basis with a weak solution of one part bleach to four parts water. The bleach will help to kill off mold spores before they can multiply and spread through the furniture.
