Design A Kid'S Closet

Organized closets can help your kid's room stay cleaned.

Children need an organized closet to keep their clothes and accessories well cared for. Transform a traditional one-bar closet into a space appropriate for a child and teenager alike. Although some organization systems are versatile enough to adapt, you'll need to consider future needs of the closet. Place everyday clothing and toys within easy reach of your child so cleanup will be easier. Keep closets organized by cleaning and purging from time to time. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Install a second rod in the closet, at about half the height of the first rod. This allows children to reach clothes for themselves, and keeps nicer, unused clothing out of reach.

2. Install a second shelf above your hanging rod so you don't waste extra space going up to the ceiling. Store extra linens or seldom-used clothes on the upper shelf of the closet. Use bins or plastic tubs to keep the items dust-free.

3. Install open shelving for shoes and toys.

4. Add hooks on the wall for kids to hang jackets and backpacks.

5. Hang over-the-door style racks for hat, toy and shoe storage.

6. Label drawers and bins to help kids put things away in the proper place. Use pictures or drawings for younger children, and words for older kids.

7. Stack smaller drawers, cubbies or baskets on the floor of the closet. This allows you to house shoes or organize toys easier.

8. Hang canvas organizers on the closet rod, which are appropriate for small accessories, shoes or folded sweaters.
