Clean A Cedar Chifferobe

Cedar storage furniture provides a beautiful place to keep linens and clothing. The aromatic cedar also repels pests and protects the contents. Most chifferobes or chests have been finished on the outside and left natural on the inside. The exterior and interior require different cleaning methods, but both are simple. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Cleaning the Exterior

1. Wash the exterior surface of the chifferobe or cedar chest with a solution of mild soap and water with a cotton rag, well wrung out, to remove surface dirt.

2. Remove stubborn dirt with a rag dipped in vinegar. If you need something stronger, try mineral spirits or ammonia.

3. Dry wet areas with a dry cloth.

4. Protect the cleaned exterior surfaces with furniture paste wax. Follow manufacturer's directions to apply.

Cleaning the Interior

5. Wipe the interior of cedar chest or chifferobe with a damp rag to remove dirt and dust.

6. Clean with mineral spirits and steel wool, rubbing with the grain, for stubborn dirt.

7. Sand the interior with fine-grit sandpaper to refresh the scent.

8. Wipe again with a wet rag and leave the lid or doors open to dry. The evaporating water will draw out the cedar oils to the surface where they will permeate the interior again and give it a cedar scent.
