In a small room, space is a commodity. To maximize storage potential and create more space for living, "think vertically." One way of doing this is to put shelves in the room. Shelves can be placed almost anywhere-along one wall, along the perimeter of the room, in corners or under a loft bed. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Examine your room. Decide how many shelves you want and where you want to put them. If you've decided to line one wall with shelves, measure the wall. Use paper and pencil to sketch ideas, then pick the one that appeals to you most.
2. Find shelves in different shapes, styles and materials at a flea market, secondhand store or discount store. Use sandpaper and paint to create a custom shelf that matches your decorating preferences.
3. Use an electronic stud finder to find a stud in the wall. A stud is a support beam behind the wall and is ideal for holding the weight of a shelf.
4. Drive nails into the wall to hold the shelves.
5. Place the shelves on the nails, making sure they are properly secured and level.
6. Repeat steps 3 through 5 until you have the shelves in your desired pattern. Fill them with the items you want to store or display.
