Minimum Hanging Length For A Closet

Some clothes require more length than others.

A closet is a useful part of any home. It is generally the one area where clothing hangs in a vertical orientation. This type of storage is ideal for your pants, shirts and ties because it does not wrinkle them like folding and stacking will. When designing a closet, ensure there is a minimum hanging length available. Does this Spark an idea?

Traditional Hanging Length

The traditional hanging length for most garments is 40 to 42 inches of vertical space, which is why most closet rods are hung at 45 inches from the floor of the closet. This length is ideal for shirts, slacks and sweaters. The 45 inches of space even allows extra room for storage under the clothing. If you own a regular bedroom closet, this is the length the rod will hang in most cases.

Long Garment Lengths

Some clothes take up more space than the average 42 inches. These garments include dresses, gowns and trench coats. Night gowns may also take up more space than 42 inches. When clothing of this length is hung on a standard closet rack, it drags on the ground. So a tall or long garment rod is installed at 60 to 65 inches from the floor. At this length, any dress or formal attire longer than normal is safe from dragging on the floor.

Tall Garment Rod

A tall garment is one worn by a taller person. Taller people naturally have longer clothes and therefore require more hanging space in their closets. The good news is they can reach the closet rods, which hang at anywhere from 60 to 72 inches. When a taller person is hanging longer garments, the rod is set closer to 72 inches. The height of the rod depends on the length of the clothing as it may be set at any height. As long as the height is comfortable to reach and keep rods off the floor, the rod height is correct.

Double Rods

A double rod is one closet rod stacked on the other, each in one section of the closet. In this case the normal hanging height of 40 inches is observed. One rod is hung at 40 inches from the floor; the other is hung at 80 inches. There usually is no storage between or beneath the rods, but there is an additional storage area on either side of the double rod installation because the two rods have cut the overall closet space needed for hanging clothes in half.
