Standard Closet Height

The height of a closet depends on a variety of factors.

Closets come in a vast range of sizes. Their main dimensions are usually dictated by the size of the home and the storage needs of the individuals in the home. Closet height is not standardized either. However, some guidelines and standards will help you decide on heights for your particular closet. Does this Spark an idea?

Interior Closet Height

How high the interior of the closet is depends mainly on the height of the surrounding home ceilings. In most homes, a closet is framed into the existing room space by putting up walls from floor to ceiling, which means the closet interior is as high as the ceilings. In today's modern homes that is usually 8-feet high. In luxury apartments and homes, that height is 9 feet, which allows for plenty of space to hang garments and for over the closet rod storage.

Rod Hanging Height

The height of a closet is not confined to ceiling height. Closet rods are a part of most closets today, and these rods all hang at the same standard height. Since garments usually run between 30 and 40 inches long, a closet rod is typically hung at 45 inches high. This height allows room below even the longest garments for shoe and boot storage. The rod is also very easy to reach as it is chest high on most adults.

Double Rod Heights

A double rod is two rods hung one on top of the other. The rods are stacked to conserve space. This arrangement means one rod is hung higher than normal to allow for two hanging areas. Each area has 40 inches of vertical hanging space. The top rod is hung at 80 inches while the bottom rod is set at a height of 40 inches. This dual hanging arrangement is used in walk-in closets to make room for shelving next to the clothes hanging areas.

Tall Garment Heights

Tall garments or long dresses require more height than normal shirts and slacks. When a taller person hangs their closet rod, he considers the length of the clothing and his own height to determine how high to hang the rod. Typically, a tall garment rod hangs at 60 or 65 inches from the floor of the closet. This is still accessible even for someone who is under 6-feet tall. However, dresses, long coats and suits will not drag on the floor when hung from rods at this height.
