Fix The Clothing Rack In The Closet

Due to the weight of clothing, a closet rack often sags or breaks, requiring an immediate repair. Fixing this issue is not difficult but it will require some common repair skills and the ability to use a few different tools. The main objective here is to replace the closet rod with something sturdier, like a metal closet rod. So, it's important to have access to either typical plumbing pipe, or a sturdier, heavy-duty closet rod, available at many home improvement stores. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Take the clothes down from the rack and place them in a safe place like on your bed or in another storage closet.

2. Remove the old rack rod. Unscrew the mounting screw from the rod bracket with a screwdriver, and lift the rod out of the bracket, then slide it out of the bracket on the other wall. If you have a two-piece bracket, just unscrew the top of the bracket so you can slide the rod up and out.

3. Measure the distance between the two mounting brackets with a tape measure and write it down. Find a heavy-duty closet rod or a metal pipe with a diameter of 1 1/4 inches that meets or exceeds this measurement.

4. Fit the new rod into the bracket. If necessary, measure the appropriate distance on the pipe with a tape measure and make a mark. Attach a pipe cutter on the mark. Spin the pipe cutter around the pipe, tighten the handle, and spin it again until the pipe is cut.

5. Replace the top bracket and screw it into the wall once the new rod is in place. Or, screw the rod to the mounting bracket with the mounting screw, if your bracket requires the rod to be mounted in this way.
