Linen Closet Organization Ideas

Designate a particular area for folded towels and other linen closet contents.

An organized linen closet makes a positive impression when your guests reach for a bath towel. A simple organization system also makes it easier for you to locate the guest sheets, soap and other items stored in the linen closet. The size of your closet and your personal organizational style influence the best options for your linen closet organization. Does this Spark an idea?

Sorting

A linen closet organization project offers an ideal time to sort out the contents of the closet. Pull out everything from the closet. Sort the items by type and size. For example, you might have piles for hand towels, bath towels and beach towels. Sheets are sorted by which beds they go to. Get rid of any old linens that are no longer functional. Assign each different type of linen its own spot in the closet. This makes the items easy to find and keeps the closet organized.

Shelf Dividers

Many linen closets feature shelves to hold the towels, sheets and other items. The large, flat surfaces work well for the linens, but there is also the potential for the linens to tip. The piles might also get mixed up when someone grabs something from the closet. Shelf dividers keep the linen closet contents separated and upright in neat piles. Look for shelf dividers in stores that sell home products. Another option is to make your own shelf dividers using thin wood pieces. Cut the wood to size and screw the pieces to the shelf.

Baskets

Baskets work well for smaller items kept in the linen closet. Measure the distance from one shelf to the next so you know how much clearance is available. Purchase baskets that will easily fit onto the shelves based on those measurements. Baskets with cloth liners prevent items from snagging on the inside. Use a different basket for each item. You might have a basket for washcloths, soap and other toiletries. Place the baskets where they are easy to grab without straining.

Labels

Labels help the entire family with the linen closet organization. The labels also help guests find exactly what they need. Choose baskets for the linen closet that have spots for labels. An adhesive label on the shelf offers a simple labeling system. If the shelf is thick enough, consider using metal or wood label holders that you can screw into the shelf.
