Yard Barn Ideas

Sheds store a variety of garden implements.

Small barns in your yard serve to store gardening implements such as tractors, hand tools and lawn mowers. Some garden barns can also double as greenhouses when fitted with sloped, glass-paneled roofs. Barns can be purchased as a kit from home-supply stores, or you can design your own to suit your needs. Does this Spark an idea?

Greenhouse Barns

Greenhouse barns are dual-purpose barns that not only store your garden implements in dry safety, they are also used to start seeds early in the spring. If the greenhouse shed is insulated as well, some plants can continue to bear fruit or vegetables well into the winter months. Greenhouse barns use a long shelf under the window on one side of the barn with implement storage on the opposite wall.

Pole Barns

Pole barns are the most basic shed structure available. They comprise a series of poles that are sunk into the ground, sheeted with plywood and fitted with a roof. Pole barns may have dirt or wood floors depending on the complexity of construction. These barns are typically the least expensive to build because they utilize fewer pieces during the construction process.

Prefabricated Storage Barns

Prefabricated storage barns may be constructed of steel or plastic, and can be set up in just a few hours. They are purchased as packaged kits at home stores. While these barns have the advantage of being weathertight and bug-resistant, the metal sheds are subject to corrosion and are easily dented, and plastic sheds fade significantly and can crack because they are in the sun every day.

Garden Closets

Garden closets are much smaller prefabricated storage barns and may be only 2 or 3 feet deep. These sheds are constructed of plastic and hold such items as shovels, rakes, leaf blowers and trimmers. They are ideal for small yards, being unobtrusive and easily placed against the house or a fence.
