Building Shelves For A Closet

Designing your Shelves

First, take a moment to think about what you want to store in your closet. The shelves should be sized to store everything you want to keep organized from shoes to large boxes of items. They should also be arranged so to provide quick access to the items you use regularly.

Getting the Materials

Most hardware stores and home centers have everything you need, including shelving braces, shelves, screws and drywall hangers. Many shelves are simply made from fiberboard coated with white or wood-grain laminate. These boards can be bought by the foot and cut to your specifications. You install rubber gaskets to finish the edges.

Adjustable Track Shelves

Adjustable track shelving starts with long metal tracks with slots every inch. You attach the track rods to the wall of the closet and then insert bracing at any height. Place several tracks along the back of the closet, and you can easily hang different sized shelves at different levels for a custom closet at a bargain price.

Custom Closets

A custom closet is one that you design or have designed by an expert. These closet installations come in many varieties, with expensive real wood shelves, shoe storage, clothes rods and many other features that you can specify. They are a little more expensive, but you may be happier with your closet.
