Make Your Closet Glamorous

Spruce up your closet and turn it from drab to fab.

Closet space is one of the most sought-after commodities in houses, but closet space is nothing if it's not a bit glamorous. Whether you are after rock-glam, sophisticated glamour or girly glamour, there are a number of ways to transform your closet space -- no matter how large or small -- from drab to "fab." A glamorous closet also needs to be well organized, otherwise it will just be a messy closet, and messy closets are never glamorous. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove all the contents of your closet and sort through your clothes, shoes and accessories culling items you no longer wear; glamming up your closet is an opportunity to give it a fresh, clean vibe.

2. Apply wallpaper to the back wall of the closet or the back of the closet doors. Choose wallpaper that has a glamorous pattern, like a fleur de lis or another regal-type pattern. Do not apply it to the whole closet, especially if you have a walk-in, but rather you want a hint of the pattern to add a touch of glamour, without overwhelming the space.

3. Attach a chandelier or other fancy light shade to the light area in the closet. Light is an important part of any closet, but it doesn't have to be boring; choose interesting designs or shapes to give it an added touch.

4. Lay down a throw rug or two in a soft, plush material. Animal prints work well to add a glamorous feel, contrasting with the regal wallpaper, or you can add a block of bright color to the closet with a colored shag pile rug.

5. Set a feature chair in smaller closets, or at the side of wall closets. Use an upholstered bench or even a chaise-lounge in closets with a little more room. Choose a chair or lounge with Louise XV detailing for the utmost in glamour.

6. Hang a wall mirror -- preferably a full-body mirror -- on one wall of the closet or on the back of the closet door. Again, choose a frame that has some glamorous detailing, such as intricate carving on the frame or a gold-leaf coating. A standing mirror can substitute in closets without much wall space or next to a wall closet.

7. Place closet deodorizers (ones that kill odor without fragrance) in the closet before replacing your clothes. Nothing kills glamour like musty smells.

8. Remove all wire, old or mismatched hangers and replace them with hangers all of the same sort. For a girly glamour feel, satin-lined hangers work great, while most other closets should use wood hangers all in the same color and shape.

9. Use closet organizers, like clear shoe boxes or drawer dividers to help keep your clothes and accessories organized in the closet. Do not use fabric hanging shelves, as this can take away from the glamour. If you need extra shelving, consider a quick do-it-yourself shelf installation using decorative cast-iron shelf brackets drilled into the back wall of the closet with a shelf top placed on top, or source an antique vanity to put in the closet under the hanging section to utilize the space.
