What Is A Good Size For A Coat Closet

Coat closets come in a range of sizes.

A coat closet is used to hang coats and, at times, to store odds and ends, like tools, snow shovels or even games. The coat closet is often near the door, making it easy to take off a coat and hang it in the closet. If you are building a home from scratch and designing an entryway coat closet, bare a few things in mind about the size of the closet. Does this Spark an idea?

Depth

Coat closet depth is determined by the amount of space needed to hang the typical coat or jacket. This is 28 inches in most cases. Some coats are larger, however. For instance, a larger individual's coat may require up to 30 inches of space. To play it safe, make the depth of the coat closet at least 28 inches or more. Remember that this is the interior space inside the closet. It is only wise to make the coat closet this deep if no other objects are to be stored in the closet.

Width

The width of the coat closet is determined by how many coats are to be hung in the closet. This depends on how many individuals are in the household. Account for the number of coats each person has, and then decide if leaving extra room for visitors' coats is a wise idea. Generally, it may take up to 6 inches of width to hang a winter coat. So, if each person has two or three coats, account for this in your measurement. Many coat closets are only between 3 and 4 feet wide. For larger families, go up to 6 feet wide.

Height of Interior and Hanging Rod

The height of the coat closet is determined by the home or building's height. The coat closet is simply framed into the building. The ceiling is not lower than or higher than the surrounding rooms' ceilings, except when the coat closet is inside a foyer with an arched or open ceiling. The height of the hanging rod inside the coat closet is a little higher than bedroom closets, however. Coats are generally longer than garments, so the hanging rod in a coat closet is set at 60 or 65 inches. Bedroom closet rod heights are set at 45 inches. The height depends on the owner. If the owner is taller, setting the rod at 65 inches is a good idea.

Door Sizing

The height of the coat closet door is going to be the standard 80 inches like other interior doors. It will also be the standard 34 inches wide like other doors in the home. If the doors in the home are wider or higher than normal, it is up to the owner's discretion to make the coat closet doors the same size or smaller. A wider 36-inch door, or a 36-inch pair of bifold doors, makes accessing a larger coat closet easier. Doors to the coat closet are also 1 1/4 inches thick.
