Donate Clothes To Women Coming Into A Workplace

Donate the right business clothes for a job interview.

Women who are entering the workplace during a time of hardship need appropriate clothing to get a job. There are organizations that are set up specifically for this type of service. If you donate clothing to a charitable organization not expressly for this population, your donation may be sold through a thrift store and may not reach the intended recipient. Take the time to contact the correct organization so that your gently-worn clothing reaches women who need these clothes. Government agencies, domestic-violence shelters and homeless shelters refer women to these organizations for free business attire.

Instructions

1. Contact Dress for Success or the Women's Alliance. Both organizations provide services beyond just giving away clothing; they also help women get jobs and training. Visit both organizations' websites to see if there is a donation drop-off site near you. Shipping may be an option if there is no location near enough to you. Always call the nearest affiliate to you on the website to find out exactly what they need and get it to them.

2. Call local churches, religious organizations and community-outreach programs. Many cities have their own programs for donating women's business clothing.

3. Gather appropriate clothing from your closet. Examine the clothing you would like to donate to ensure that it meets the organization's guidelines. Contacting the appropriate organization is important, so that you have a list of what types of clothing and accessories are acceptable and in need. Generally, the need is for business suits, dress pants, blouses, plus-size professional attire, suitable business shoes and professional accessories. Keep in mind that if you would not allow your best friend to wear the clothing at a job interview, then it is not appropriate for this type of donation.

4. Wash or dry-clean your donations. Place the clean clothes on hangers or fold them neatly in a box depending on how the clothing is being transported to the drop-off location.

5. Request a receipt. Charitable donations are tax-deductible. Get the receipt at the time of delivery; if you are shipping your donation, ask that they send you a receipt.
