Make A Clothes Organizer

A closet organizer can make the most of your available space.

In many closets, a great deal of space goes unused. A clothing organizer that fits into your closet can make the most of the available room. It will also create an ordered system to store your clothing, shoes and accessories. Even if you do not have advanced construction skills, you can build an organizer that will be sturdy and stable. Keep the organizer to a simple geometric arrangement that will be easy to construct and look clean when inserted into the closet. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Make a sketch of your closet and label it with the exact dimensions. Note the width, height and depth of the closet as well as the measurements of the door. If the door is considerably smaller than the interior of the closet, make a special note of its measurements and consider how you will be able to angle shelving units to fit inside. Based on the amount and type of clothing you have, divide the closet into approximate areas for hanging storage, shelving and drawers.

2. Create an area to hang clothing. Based on the amount of hanging clothing you have, allot just enough room. Choose the width of this section based on the number of hanging garments you have; there is no sense in using the whole width of the closet if you prefer to fold clothing. If you only hang a few items, install a vertical board from the floor to the closet shelf and use a tension rod to run from there to the wall. For many hanging clothes, you can install a second bar below the first.

3. Install a set of shelving units 3 1/2 feet below the clothing bar. You can use manufactured bookcases or install your own floating shelves. If you want to create a shoe organizer, build a grid of cubby holes to store individual pairs. Build a tall compartment for boots.

4. Install floating shelves for folded clothing on the side and above the hanging clothing bar. For a simple shelf, use nails or screws to install brackets; lay planks across the brackets for sturdy shelves. You can have a home supply store cut the planks to the exact measurements.

5. Slide in bins to store small items and accessories on the shelves. Look for canvas bins, wire baskets or wooden crates that will slide in easily. If you have enough of them, the bins can replace the need for a dresser, which will save space in the room.
