Do It Yourself Home Organization

Home organization helps keep your home clean and gets your family involved.

Home organization is about creating a sustainable system for you and your family. It is also a collaborative effort by everyone who lives in your home. Once your system is in place, your family members will be responsible for keeping your system going and using it to reduce the clutter around your house and keep things where they belong. Enjoy a cleaner home by making better use of the space you have available. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Inventory your essentials. Make a list of those items that you must keep, would like to keep and items of special significance. Make a second list of those items that you can throw away. Keep items that are special and irreplaceable to you such as pictures, family documents and items owned by parents or loved ones.

2. Review your "to keep" list and determine if alternate storage options are appropriate. Safety deposit boxes are ideal for items of value, while electronic storage allows you to keep your family documents safe without taking up additional space.

3. Do a walk through of your home, paying special attention to unused or underused areas of storage that you already have available. This includes space under beds, closets and attics that are disorganized. Determine if the disorganization in these areas is wasting space.

4. Throw away those items from your "get rid of" list. Remember to include furniture that you are ready to throw out. Make a day of the event and get your family to help you.

5. Clean your house thoroughly after you throw everything away to remove the mess that is left and reduce the chance of further clutter later. This includes vacuuming and scrubbing the areas you intend to use for storage such as closets and under the beds.

6. Design your new storage system. Include space for all of your essentials and make sure you allocate enough space for each area. Account for enough space for the things you will continue to accumulate.

7. Purchase organizational aides to help you organize the spaces you intend to use. Include closet organizers, storage boxes and desk organizers. Place these aides in their respective areas. Make sure to instruct those who live with you about your new system and encourage them to help you keep things in their proper places.

8. Take some time each week to ensure that everything is in the correct place and to reorganize things as needed to keep your organizational system updated and working.
