Donate Clothing In Michigan

Donate your moderately used clothing to charity in Michigan for a tax break.

Charities in Michigan accept clothing donations that are in good condition. Good condition translates into moderately worn without stains, tears or other damage. Your donated clothing is given to the less fortunate, sold in stores operated by charities such as Goodwill and the Salvation Army and used to provide men and women entering the workforce with appropriate business clothing. What your donation is used for depends on which charity you donate the clothing to.

Instructions

1. Select a charity in your Michigan city. If you do not have a favorite charity or are not familiar with the charities in your local area you can do a local charity search using a source such as Charity Navigator.

2. Search the Internal Revenue Service's charity database to determine whether or not the charity you chose is a registered 501(c)3, which is a non-profit organization. The IRS only allows tax deductions for donations made to registered 501(c)3 corporations.

3. Call your charity to find out when and where you can donate your moderately worn clothing. All charities have drop-off locations, which have varying hours. To receive a tax receipt to use for income tax purposes, you must drop off your donation during business hours when a charity employee is available to provide your receipt.

4. Wash and fold your donation. Search all pockets to make sure no personal or valuable items are left behind and mistakenly donated.

5. Determine the value of your donation. Michigan charities are not responsible for valuing your donation, only for accepting it.
