Keeping mice from invading a house can be a daunting task for some homeowners. While some homes tend not to attract mice, others--in particular older homes--tend to be "mice magnets." Repelling mice can be a tough challenge, in part because the methods used to get rid of mice can cause more harm than good. Poison, for instance, can be very effective in killing mice, but it can't stop more mice from entering your home, and beloved pets and children could eat the poison and suffer severe consequences. in addition, when a poisoned mouse goes into a house's walls, attic or basement, and dies, the resulting odor can be a very disruptive experience. Traps can be effective but noisy and unsanitary. Whether they are traditional or humane, you have to empty them, and many people have phobias about mice. Use Mint to Repel Mice
1. Plant mint plants around the foundation of your home. This will help to repel mice and keep them from entering your home in the first place. Mint is a fairly invasive plant, and will grow quickly. Weed carefully to prevent mint from invading your lawn, if desired.
2. Sprinkle mint leaves in areas mice tend to frequent, such as in the back of cupboards, in the backs of closets, basements, dark corners, etc. The mint will repel the mice. Exchange fresh mint leaves for old frequently.
3. Mix peppermint soap into your cleaning mixes and mop buckets. The peppermint soap helps to keep mice away. Brands such as Dr. Bronner's can be very effective. Use small amounts when mopping and larger amounts for washing bathrooms and kitchens. Wash cupboards, baseboards and other mouse-prone areas frequently.
4. Combine water and peppermint extract (found in the grocery store) and place in a spray bottle. Spray the mixture in cupboards, garages, basements and the perimeter of rooms. Spray the exterior of your home wherever mint is not growing to further discourage mice.
5. Make peppermint tea sachets. Add peppermint tea to sachets and place them in drawers throughout your home. Add peppermint tea sachets to boxes full of books and papers, to discourage the mice from chewing these items.
