A two-car garage is approximately 20 feet wide by 22 feet deep. Many garages are much deeper. 1. Contact the local building department. In some areas, residential properties must have a garage or carport. Find out if you must replace the garage you are converting with another garage or a carport.
2. Determine the size of your septic tank, if your house has one. Septic tanks are typically sized according to the number of bedrooms in a house. If your septic tank is not large enough to add another bedroom to your house, you may have to call the new room something other that a "bedroom." Usually a room is defined as a bedroom if it has a closet.
3. Remove the garage door. If the garage has a garage door opener, it will also need to be removed.
4. Frame a new wall where the garage door has been removed. Design the exterior to blend in with the exterior of the house, and add windows to match the house's other front windows.
5. Insulate the exterior walls of the garage. If the original walls are already dry-walled, blow insulation can be blown into the walls. Install installation to the exterior walls and over the ceiling, in the attic. Insulate the new wall that replaced the garage door.
6. Frame in a bedroom closet. A simple way to make a closet is to use mirrored closet doors. Measure the area along the wall to use as a closet and add tracks along the ceiling and floor to insert the closet doors.
7. Remove any fluorescent or garage-styled lighting and replace with interior house lighting.
8. Drywall the walls of the room. The new wall that replaced the garage door will need to be dry-walled. The area along the ends of the bedroom closet will also need to be framed in and dry-walled. Make any drywall repairs, as needed, to the rest of the room.
9. Consider replacing the door between the house and garage with an interior door, to match the rest of house's interior doors.
10. Repaint the interior of the room. If necessary, replace electrical and light-switch plates.
11. Add floor covering to the room. Carpet and padding can be installed, and if the concrete floor is fairly level, tile or other flooring can be used.
