Mirrored closet doors are common choices to help open up a room and brighten it by reflecting light. They often extend from the floor to the ceiling and slide back and forth via a track system. If you have existing mirror doors and want to replace them, much of the floor preparation work is already complete. After removing the existing panels and track, simply install the new doors. While the process is not challenging, the doors are often heavy and awkward to handle. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
Remove the Old Mirror Closet Door
1. Step inside the closet and close the doors. Look at the bottom of the rear mirrored door where the wheels are located. Locate the small metal or plastic tab that extends from the door to the outside of the track and pull it out and up to detach it. This tab is the anti-jump mechanism.
2. Grasp the sides of the door and lift up by 1/2 inch. Pull the bottom of the door out of the track and then lower the top of the door out of the track. Angle the door so you can get it through the closet opening and set it out of the way.
3. Remove the remaining door in the same manner until only the track remains attached.
4. Kneel down and examine the track on the floor to locate the screws fastening it to the floor. Remove each of the screws using a power drill.
5. Place a step ladder inside the closet opening and remove each of the screws to detach it as well.
Install the New Mirror Closet Door
6. Open the new mirror sliding door and unpack the track system. Lay the new track on the floor and align the old upper and lower tracks next to the new tracks to size them. Draw a pencil mark on the new tracks at the location where the old tracks end.
7. Discard the old tracks and insert thin wooden blocks inside the grooves of the track to prevent them from bending. Cut through the pencil lines on the new track using a hack saw.
8. Climb the step ladder and align the new upper track in the same location as the old one. Insert the provided screws through the screw holes using the power drill.
9. Climb down and position the new lower track on the floor in the same position as the old one. Insert the provided screws into the screw holes to secure it to the subfloor.
10. Pick up the front mirrored door panel and move it inside the closet. Turn it mirrored side out and slide the top rollers into the front groove of the upper track. Then, push the bottom of the door into the front groove of the lower track.
11. Install the other door in the same manner, placing it in the back groove of the upper and lower tracks. Grasp the lower anti-jump tabs and position them so they latch onto the outside of the track.
