Choose A New York University Dorm

Don't get stuck living in a room like this!

Living in the middle of New York City can be exciting and scary, and choosing the right dorm when attending NYU could make or break your college social life. There are many options to explore when coming to NYU and living situations are no different. Whether you want a home-away-from home complete with a dining hall and maid service, or an on-your-own apartment experience, NYU's dorms offer it.

Instructions

Choose a New York University Dorm

1. Choose whether you would like an apartment-style or traditional dorm. The traditional dorms, including Hayden, Rubin, Goddard and Weinstein do not have kitchens inside the dorms and are closest to the NYU campus, directly in Washington Square. All of the traditional dorms, with the exception of Goddard Hall, have dining halls inside. Hayden, directly in Washington Square, and Rubin, located on 5th Avenue, are generally known as the nicest traditional dorms with the largest rooms and the most character. Goddard Hall is the closest to campus, although the rooms are small. Weinstein has the best dining hall, although the rooms have an institutional feel.

2. If you would rather live in an apartment-style dorm, the chances of having a dining hall are slimmer. Apartment-style dorms usually consist of a bathroom, a kitchen and either a studio living space with two roommates or four roommates with two bedrooms and a common living room. Some apartment-style dorms are located in Union Square, including Palladium, University Hall, Carlyle Court and Coral Towers.

3. Even if you are living in an apartment-style dorm, a dining hall may be available in your building. The two newest dorms, University Hall and Palladium, come complete with large, new dining halls that even Rubin and Weinstein residents may travel down to Union Square for.

4. If you are interested in gym access, your best bet may be Palladium Hall, located in Union Square. The Palladium gym, located right in the building, boasts an Olympic-Sized swimming pool, basketball courts, and lots of weight and aerobic machines. If you'd rather not live in Union Square, the Coles Sports Center is located in the West Village, not far from the Washington Square campus. All gyms on campus are free for students.

5. There are other dorms to consider if you don't mind living a short commute from campus, including Water Street and Cliff Street, located in the Financial District, and Greenwich Hotel, which is located in Greenwich Village. Greenwich Hotel is one of the farthest and oldest dorms, but because it was a renovated hotel, Greenwich Hotel is the only dorm with weekly maid service. All dorms that are located beyond the Washington Square Campus provide frequent and free shuttle buses.

6. If you have any friends who currently attend NYU, ask if they could show you around to some of the dorms. Take pictures to compare and contrast which dorm you would like to live in. There is no dorm that is greater than any other, they are all different in their own ways. It all depends on what your lifestyle will be at NYU.
