Many ways exist to organize your hall closet into a functional space.
Many hall closets are crammed with a wide variety of items. When you open them, all you see is clutter and chaos. Many options are available to organize these small spaces and make them pleasing to the eye, as well as functional. The first step is to empty them out and decide how you want to use the space. Experts at the Container Store recommend considering the closet location to decide use it. Does this Spark an idea?
Coat Closet
If your hall closet is situated near the front door or entryway, consider making it a coat closet, which means that all other items, such as brooms and vacuum cleaners, need to find new homes. Divide up your coats into groups, such as heavy winter coats, ski coats, lightweight coats and dressy coats. Buy uniform-size hangers to put the coats on, which helps to ensure lighter, thinner coats don't get lost behind bulkier ones. Hang the longest coats on the ends and the shortest ones in the middle. Use an over-the-door organizer to store gloves, scarves and hats. Place snow boots in plastic container bins on the floor of the closet.
Laundry Room Pantry
When your hall closet is located adjacent to the laundry room, use it to store your essential laundry items, such as spot treatment sprays, detergent and extra hangers. Most hall closets are equipped with one hanging rack, so you'll want to add in basic shelving to store your laundry items. Consider installing a fold-down ironing board to the back of the closet door.
Bedroom Closet Overflow
Older, smaller houses often have tiny bedroom closets that are not big enough to store all clothing items. If you live in an area that has changing seasons and temperatures, using the hall closet as a bedroom closet overflow is a simple way to organize your clothing. Purchase large plastic bins to store out-of-season clothes and shoes. For example, during the summertime, place sweaters, corduroy pants and boots in the hall closet bins. In the wintertime, move the winter clothes back into your bedroom, and place sandals, swimsuits and sundresses into the hall closet bins.
Activity Closet
If you have kids or are just an activity kind of person, use your hall closet to store games, sports equipment and costumes. Purchase and install shelving in your hall closet first, and add plastic storage boxes. Divide your things into categories. You can easily stack board games with their original boxes on the top shelf, while placing card decks and domino boxes in the plastic bins. Create a sports box that can hold all your small items, such as baseball gloves, batting gloves, golf balls, racquetball balls, tennis balls, softballs and baseballs. Store larger sports equipment items, such as golf clubs, rackets and bats in a large floor bin or place them up against the sidewalls. Organize their positions by their seasons. For example, if you live in an area with cold, snowy winters, you won't need your golf clubs until spring. Place them in the back of the closet until then.
