Donate your prom dress.
You have spent hours in New York boutiques and department stores looking for the perfect prom dress. Now that the special night is a memory, your dress is probably hanging in your closet. Your dress can have an after life if you donate it to one of several New York area organizations with programs to distribute dresses to financially disadvantaged girls who may not otherwise have the resources to buy a dress for their special night. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Get your dress in showroom shape. Dry clean your garment. Your dress or gown should be in ready to wear condition, with no stains, missing sequins or loose threads.
2. Find a group that accepts prom dress donations. The New York area is home to several organizations that collect and distribute gently used prom dresses. The larger organizations include Operation Fairy Dust, Operation PROM, Prom Project and W Girls.
3. Bring or mail your dress to a collection site for one of the above organizations. New York area dry cleaners Arthur Copeland, Cameo Cleaners and Jeeves of Belgravia have teamed with Operation Fairy Dust to receive donations and provide complimentary dry cleaning.
4. Follow organization guidelines for acceptable donations. Most organizations accept only dresses five years or newer. Many organizations are in particular need of plus size or larger size dresses.
5. Organize your own prom dress drive. DonateYourDress.org suggests planning a strategy to publicize your drive via email, flyers and Facebook. Decide how donations will be collected and provide a deadline. Work with a larger organization that may help you.
