Coat closets serve a functional purpose in the home, but lack of organization and effective use of the space has the potential to turn such a closet into a cluttered mess. When remodeling a coat closet, function is often the prime focus. Usable storage space that allows you to easily find what you're looking for is key to an efficient coat closet. Instructions
1. Inspect your coat closet to give yourself a better idea of the changes you wish to make. Look at the type of storage, such as rods and shelves, used in the closet, and how well they work for your needs. Make a list of the things you wish to modify during the renovation.
2. Remove all of the items in the coat closet. Remove any shelves or closet rods that you plan to replace or remove completely. Wipe down the walls, door and flooring to ensure clean surfaces.
3. Paint the interior walls of the coat closet. Paint any shelves that you will place into the closet.
4. Install a closet rod to hold the coats. If you want additional hanging space for coats, add a second closet rod below. This option also works well if you have young children as they are better able to reach their own coats.
5. Install a shelf above the highest closet rod. If the closet is tall enough, add a second higher shelf for storage of items to which you infrequently require access.
6. Install floor-to-ceiling shelves along one side of the closet running perpendicular to the closet rod if preferred. This gives you more shelves that are easier to access. For a combination, build the shelf and the top with the side shelves spanning from the floor up to the higher shelf.
7. Add a shoe rack in the bottom of the closet to store extra shoes.
8. Install hooks on the inside of the coat closet door for additional hanging space. The hooks work well for visitors who don't want to dig through your coats to find their own.
