Reach In Closet Ideas

Adding a shoe rack to your reach-in closet can help keep its floor neat and organized.

If you're lucky, your bedroom has at least one reach-in closet where you can store clothing and accessories. However, you may find that this doesn't allow for maximum storage space, so your closet can quickly become overstuffed and messy, no matter how often you try to purge unused items. Fortunately, there are several ways to make the most of the available space in the closet so your clothing is stored in a neat and orderly fashion that allows you to easily locate items when you need them. Does this Spark an idea?

Enlarge the Opening

When a reach-in closet only has a single door, access to the space may be limited. As a result, you may have a difficult time finding clothing items when dressing or returning them to the closet. This kind of limited access often leads to your closet becoming messy and disorganized. Enlarging the closet opening and replacing a single door with sliding doors or a wide bi-fold door will allow you to view your entire closet and easily locate and put away clothing. It can also make adding a closet organizer easier.

Install Shelving

In some cases, you may want to store wardrobe items in your closet that can't be hung on hangers, such as hats, shoe boxes or purses. If your closet doesn't already have a shelf, consider adding shelving. You can purchase inexpensive wire shelves meant for closets at a home improvement store and install them above the closet's rod. With a large closet, you may even add shelves below the rod where you can store folded clothing that may be too heavy for hangers.

Add Hooks

Using all parts of your closet allows you to maximize its storage space. Add several coat hooks to the back of the door and inside walls. While you can hang jackets and coats on them as intended, hooks are also ideal for hanging scarves, hats and purses. They also make an inexpensive jewelry storage option, because you can hang necklaces and bracelets around them for easy access.

Hang a Shoe Organizer

Instead of leaving your shoes in a heap on your closet floor, a shoe organizer helps ensure that you can always find the pair you want. There are several different styles of organizers that may work for your space. You can purchase a rack that can be placed on the floor and allows for shoes to be slid on wire inserts for easy storage. If you have a larger closet, you may prefer a wall-mounted cubby organizer. These are typically made from wood and can shield your shoes from most airborne dust and debris.

Mount a Mirror

If you like to check the look of your outfit before leaving home in the morning, having a full-length mirror in your closet can be very convenient. A bi-fold mirror that provides additional views is an effective option. You can add it to the front or back of the door, depending on whether you have installed additional accessories like hooks or a tie rack.
