Make A Closet Into An Office

Closet

If you don't have an extra room in your house to use as an office, you may want to consider using one of your walk-in closets. These closets can actually make a nice little office for one person. You can set up a computer desk with a filing cabinet in the corner. Having a separate room also makes it easier for you to claim this space as a deduction on your taxes at the end of the year.

Instructions

1. Empty out your closet and find a new home for the items that were in there. If you find things you never use in your closet, donate them to your local Salvation Army.

2. Remove any rods that were used to hang your clothes, but leave the shelves. The shelves can store your printer paper and extra office supplies.

3. Paint the closet a nice bright color so that it doesn't remind you of a closet. Don't use dark-colored paint because you don't have a window in the closet to provide you with naturally sunlight. A bright yellow or blue would do wonders for your new office. Don't forget to paint any shelves in the room as well.

4. Bring in your computer desk. If the closet door is too small, you may have to bring it in in pieces and then assemble it.

5. Hook up your computer, printer, fax machine and telephone. You won't have a phone jack in your new office, but you can use a portable phone. Many phones come in sets of two or three but only one base is needed. The other phones can be placed throughout the house wherever an outlet exists.

6. Add a filing cabinet. You can buy a small two-drawer filing cabinet or a larger four-drawer filing cabinet depending on how much space you have. Make sure the filing cabinet is tall but not wide.

7. Replace your closet light with a larger and much brighter light. Closet lights aren't very bright and it will be hard for you to see what you are doing.

8. Add a calendar and a bulletin board to one of the walls in your office closet. This gives the closet the appearance of a real office.
