Halloween Costume Ideas For Kids From Your Closet

Pull a costume together for your child using your closet.

Don't spend a ton of money on a costume for your child to wear once and toss in the bottom of the closet. Mine your own closet for costume inspiration for your child, and you may be surprised what you can come up with without spending any money at all. Does this Spark an idea?

Evening Gowns

Old evening gowns or party dresses can become any number of costumes for a little girl. Turn that gown into a princess dress or a beauty pageant contestant costume. Use a black evening dress to be the base for a witch costume, or a pretty dress to become a fairy's outfit.

Bathrobe

An old bathrobe can be dressed up to look like a magician's or wizard's outfit. Tape construction paper or felt stars to the robe, add a wand, and it's that simple. A little girl can dress up as a harried mom in a robe complete with curlers and holding a baby doll for a funny, easy costume.

Work Clothes

If you have to dress for your job, your kids can use that as a springboard for a costume. Scrubs, a suit and tie, police uniform, construction wear or anything that you need to wear to work can be put on a child with cute results. Roll up and pin pants if needed, and add accessories such as a stethescope for a doctor costume or a fake badge for a policeman.

Odds And Ends

That torn pair of jeans and plaid shirt could be a good look for a scarecrow, and that orange sweater you thought was a good idea but have never worn would make a precious pumpkin. Anything silver or glittery could start a robot look, and whatever looks dated can be representative of that era such as an '80s miniskirt or '70s bell bottoms. Let your kid be a hippie or dancing queen from the '70s. Leather pants can be fit for a rock star, and overalls would make a fun farmer.
