Storage shelving is a great way to utilize all of the available space in a room, keeping floors free of clutter and items better organized. Storage shelving is not difficult to assemble once you have decided where you want it. In about one hour, you can have a three-shelf unit hung on a wall using a few tools and items purchased from your local home center. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
Mounting the Standards
1. Find the studs in the wall. These will be 16-inches on center from each other. Place the stud sensor flat on the wall near where you want to hang the shelves. Put the sensor at eye level for better reading. Move the sensor toward where you want the shelving until you hear a beep or see a red line, depending on the sensor you have. This will be the edge of a stud. Mark this point with the pencil. Move the stud finder 4 inches past the mark. Put the sensor flat to the wall and move back towards the mark until you get a beep or red line; this is the other edge of the stud. Mark this spot with the pencil.
2. Use the ruler to measure 32 inches from the center of the two markings. Set the sensor at the 32-inch mark and repeat step 1 to find the second stud on which you will hang your shelving. (Measuring at 32-inch intervals means you will skip over one stud in the wall. If you expect your shelves to carry use heavy loads, don't skip over this stud and, instead, install a third standard in the center of the other two as directed below.)
3. Set the shelving height. Place one of the standards (a long metal piece with slots for the brackets) on the wall between two of the stud marks so that the standard is aligned vertically with the stud in the wall behind it. Set the standard at the height at which you want the shelving to sit. Hold the standard with one hand while placing the level alongside of it with the other hand. Level the standard by reading the bubble in the level; the bubble will be lined up straight north to south when level. Draw a line on the wall to mark the top and bottom of the standard.
4. Hold the standard on the wall in the same spot you marked when using the level. Install a screw into the top hole of the standard. Hold the screw with your fingers while resting your arm against the standard to hold it in place. Drill the screw into the wall; do not overtighten the screw. Put a screw into the bottom hole of the standard. Drill the screw into place.
5. Line up the second standard between the next set of marks, again aligned vertically with the next stud in the wall. Hold the standard in place while placing the level along the top of both standards. Level the tops of the standards to ensure shelving will be even by keeping the bubble evenly pointed left to right with the level. Mark the top and bottom of the second standard.
6. Repeat step 3 to line up the second standard to be vertical with the floor and ceiling.
7. Repeat step 4 to attach the standard to the wall.
Mounting the Shelving
8. Hook a shelf bracket into one standard at the height desired. Hook the second shelf bracket on the second standard so that it is even with the opposite bracket. Set the level on top of the brackets, against the standards, to make sure the brackets are leveled off. Adjust one of the brackets as needed up or down until they are level.
9. Set the shelf on the brackets. Line up the shelf so it looks centered. Mark the placement of the bracket holes on the wood and remove the shelf. Drill starter holes with the smaller bit. Put the shelf back on the brackets, lining up the holes. Drill screws into the holes to secure the shelving to the brackets.
10. Repeat step 1 of this section with each set of brackets.
11. Repeat step 2 of this section for each shelf.
