If you have a room and it doesn't have a closet, you cannot really count it as a bedroom. Adding a closet would make a difference, not only in organizing your clothes and things but in the value appreciation of your real estate investment. In this article we will show you add a bedroom closet in two ways- by using a ready-made closet and by building a wall closet. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
Adding a Ready-Made Closet
1. Buy a ready-made closet from your nearest home improvement store. This is the easiest, cheapest and less time consuming of the two methods. Ready-made closets come in different sizes, choose the one that would fit in the room you are working on. If it is a bedroom, consider the other furnishings that would need to go into the room, like the bed, night stands or a desk. Be sure to choose the closet that also would be able to keep your clothes and other belongings that you would want to put away.
2. Assemble the closet per the manufacturer's specification. Use the necessary tools in screwing parts together. Adjust the shelving and closet bar to the desired height.
3. Anchor the assembled closet. It is necessary to keep the closet in place so using a wall anchor will help keep it from toppling over. This is especially important if the closet will be used by a child, consider the safety of the occupant of the room. To keep it more secured do a cut-out of the base or floor molding, so that the base and back of the ready-made cabinet will sit securely and flushed against the wall. Then screw a couple of wall brackets on the top and bottom of the back of the cabinet to hold it in place.
4. Check if the closet is level and flushed and make adjustments as necessary.
5. Paint the closet with desired color.
Building a Wall Closet
6. Check the footprint of your home if you have enough space to build a closet in a room.
7. Measure the area or depth needed for the closet. Measure from the ceiling then transfer that measurement on the floor. Use a masking tape or chalk line to mark the areas.
8. Remove the baseboards and moldings. If you have crown or ceiling moldings, remove them too.
9. Cut out a portion of carpet ,where the frame will be placed ,if you have carpeted floor.
10. Install a base plate and top plate. Drill holes where you will screw the plates. For bottom plates, if you have wood floor or wood sub floor, you can drill the holes directly onto the sub floor, however, if your sub floor is made of concrete, you would have to place a 2 x 4 where the base plate will sit. you can attach the 2 x 4 on the concrete by drilling holes on the concrete using masonry bit.
11. Build the wall studs to frame the closet. Cut the first wall stud by measuring the distance between the top and bottom plates. Slide the wall stud in place against the wall then attach by drilling drywall screws. Do the same thing with the second wall stud, screw the top and bottom of the second stud on the top and bottom plates. Cut and measure 2 x 4 to be placed in between the wall studs to ensure stability and rigidity. Repeat these steps on the opposite site of the new closet.
12. Install wallboards. Measure the dimension of the frames and transfer them onto your drywall or wallboard. Simply draw a straight line using a pencil. Then using a sharp cutting knife or blade, cut-through the pencil marks. To facilitate faster cutting, flip-over the wallboard and cut on the other side. Screw or nail the wallboard to the frame.
13. Measure and install door jamb.
14. Measure and install doorstop.
15. Finish wall joints. Use self-stick perforated joint tape to cover the nail marks and to finsih off the joints of the wallboards.
16. Install closet door. You can buy door hinges or sliding mirror doors that are made to measure from your home improvement store. Then install using manufacturer's specification.
17.Finish off by applying spackling compound to cover nail holes and then painting the wallboard.
18. Install the shelves and organizers as well as the closet bar. Now it is ready to use.
