Install Wood Closet Shelves

Wooden shelves are quick and easy to make.

If you are the type who likes things organized, or just needs more closet space, consider building a few shelves in your closet to increase its storage capacity. There are all kinds of material that you can use to complete the project, but if you just want to keep it simple and inexpensive, make the shelves out of wood. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the wall of the closet where you want to put the shelves or the portion of the wall where you want to put the shelves.

2. Cut a board that equals the measurement of the wall. Use a hand saw or circular saw to make the cut. The shelf boards are typically 1 inch thick and at least 12 inches wide.

3. Measure up from the floor or down from the ceiling after locating the height that you want the shelf. Use this measurement when attaching the brackets to insure that the brackets are all at the same height.

4. Measure each bracket location and make a mark on the wall for the top of the bracket.

5. Attach shelf brackets to either end of the space where you want the shelf as well as one about midway to keep the wood from bowing. Place the bracket so that the mark is at the top of it, and use two-inch screws to anchor it to the wall. If you do not hit wall studs when you drill the screws in, take the screws out and insert drywall anchors for stability. Simply tap them in with a hammer.

6. Place the second bracket up to its mark after attaching the first one. Place a level across the first and second bracket while you are holding it to insure that it is level, and then screw it into the wall. Same as before, if you do not hit a stud, insert drywall anchors. Repeat again with the third bracket.

7. Place the board on top of the brackets.
