Build a Master Bedroom Suite
Building a master bedroom suite will require you to invest time in detailed planning. You want to create a space that looks appropriate for your home's design. For example, a beach house requires a different approach than building a master suite in a colonial home. You can create a master bedroom suite without too much difficulty if you have a sufficient budget and floor space. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Use graph paper to sketch your home's existing floor plan. Count one square of graph paper as six inches. Draw the bedroom space or other area you will designate for the master suite. You can add space from adjoining rooms, hallways or closets. Look for ways to expand the suite to include a sitting area, bathroom and large closet. Designate where bathroom plumbing pipes and drain lines will enter the room. Sketch in the exact places air and heat ducts and vents will go.
2. Consult with a building expert to define which walls are load bearing. These walls are literally holding up the weight of the house. Frame the walls you knock out to provide support that shifts weight to new beams and support posts. Install all framing in the master bedroom area, including closets and bath areas. Bring water pipes and plumbing into the bath. Run electrical wiring in the framework of every area of the suite before you install drywall. Place electrical outlet boxes. Insulate exterior walls if necessary.
3. Install drywall over the framework for the bedroom area, closet space and bath. Finish the drywall with joint compound. Hook up light fixtures and electrical outlets. Trim the room with appropriate molding and crown molding around the ceiling area. Paint the room and all adjoining areas.
4. Hang closet doors. Install a light fixture in all closet areas. Build wire or wood shelving into closets.
5. Finish the bathroom space and install the commode, sink and vanity. Put down tile and wood flooring throughout the master suite. Place baseboard materials around all floor perimeters and inside the closet.
