Remodel A Small Closet

Remodeling a small closet can make it appear bigger.

Remodeling a small closet can free up additional space, as well as make it easier to organize your belongings. Having a small, cluttered closet will make it very difficult to find anything. It can also be impossible to store your items and more of a headache to get dressed. Therefore, adding shelving, racks and storage is the best way to remodel and organize a small closet. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Clean out your closet. Discharge any items that you no longer wear or use and separate them into piles outside of the closet. Consider donating your old clothes to charity as you do not want to keep them in house as they will add to the clutter. Remove everything else out of the closet and store it in another room temporarily.

2. Decide what type of shelving you need for your closet. Clothes that need folding require drawers. Moreover, clothes that need hanging require more shelving and racks. Understanding exactly what you need before you purchase it will save you a lot of trouble and money.

3. Measure the length and the width of your closet and record the results in a notebook. Take the notebook to a home improvement store such as Lowes or Home Depot. Ask the salesperson for help with deciding what shelving will work best in your small closet. Purchase shelving, racks and storage bins or dressers. In addition, you can purchase lighting fixtures and a paint color to make the space appear bigger. Creams and powder blues tricks the eyes and mind into thinking that a small space is actually larger.

4. Paint the walls to make the room appear larger. Remember to paint the ceiling as well. A new paint color will dramatically change the overall feel of the room.

5. Add lighting to the room. Most closets do not have natural lighting. Therefore, upgrading the lighting fixture with a modern one will immediately make the room look bigger, because it will highlight all the square footage.

6. Add additional shelving and racks to the closet. Adding two rows of horizontal shelving approximately, 3 inches apart, will allow you to hang two rows of clothing on one wall. This is a good idea if you own a lot of pants and shirts. You can hang the pants on the bottom shelf and the shirts on the top shelf. Make a space in your closet for a small storage dresser where you can add your socks and undergarments. If you have many t-shirts and pajamas, you may need to purchase two dressers.

7. Add accessories to the closet to liven up the space. Pictures, a rug and maybe a small chair (if space allows) will add a personal touch to the room. It will feel more like an upscale dressing room verses a cramp closet.
