Closet Ideas Using Cedar Shelves

Cedar shelves are great for use in closets that store clothing and linens because cedar is a natural moth repellant. In addition cedar acts as a natural deodorizer and wards off moisture that can lead to mold. Use cedar shelves to store sweaters and other items that don't require hangers. Does this Spark an idea?

Natural Stained Cedar

Stain raw cedar to expose the natural beauty of the wood grain. In addition, staining the cedar can bring out the rosy color inherent in the wood. After staining the wood stain, apply a clear varnish to the shelves so that the surface is perfectly smooth and ready for clothing storage. To extend the cedar look to the walls of the closet, use cedar siding.

Painted Shelves

If you want the moth repelling properties of cedar without the more rustic appearance, paint the shelves in the same color as the closet walls.

Create Cubbies

Instead of more traditional shelves for closets use square cubbie holes. and create a modular shelf arrangement. Cedar cubbies can be used to store clothing, shoes and linens. Insert baskets into the cubbies to hold lingerie or other small items like scarves and hats.

Cedar Lining

If you want the look, smell and bug repelling properties of cedar shelves but not the expense, purchase cedar shelving liners. Shelf liners can be placed directly over existing shelves.
