Build A Simple Outdoor Closet

An outdoor closet allows you to store your gardening supplies, for example.

Outdoor storage closets or cabinets are often made of plastic and can easily break when placed in harsh weather conditions. Building your own outdoor closet with a simple design allows you to prepare it for the natural elements, so you do not have to replace it after a few months. A wooden outdoor closet is much sturdier and stronger than a plastic closet, so there is less chance of the wooden closet falling over and breaking during a rain or wind storm. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Create the pieces required for the simple outdoor closet using the pencil, measuring tape, ruler and plywood boards. Sketch two side pieces measuring 75 inches by 20 inches. Sketch two additional pieces for the top and bottom of the closet measuring 35 inches by 20 inches. For each shelf you want in your closet, use the 35-inch by 20-inch measurements.

2. Sketch the two pieces required for the back of the closet and the closet door. Both pieces should be identical and measure 75 inches by 36 inches.

3. Cut out the pieces required for the outdoor closet with the electrical saw. It will allow you to cut more straight lines in a faster manner. Sandpaper each of the cut edges after cutting is complete.

4. Place the two large 75-inch pieces vertically in front of you, but on their 1/2-inch sides. Space them evenly apart. Place the top and bottom piece in between the side pieces in a horizontal manner. You should now have an even rectangle. Use two 1-inch screws and the mechanical screwdriver in each corner to connect the pieces together. Keep the level on top of the frame to ensure it is even when you construct it.

5. Place any additional shelves you want to install in the closet horizontally inside the frame. Attach each shelf using the 1-inch screws and the mechanical screwdriver, so the screws are attached through the side pieces of the closet and extend into the shelving ends.

6. Place the backside piece on top of the wooden frame, so each side lines up. Hammer nails into the perimeter of the backside to attach it to the closet frame. When done, flip the closet right-side up.

7. Lay the closet door down on the floor to attach the hinges. Attach three hinges on one side of the door piece. Ensure that the hinges do not interfere with the shelves you have installed in the closet. Attach the hinges to the door using a screwdriver and the 1/4-inch screws. Hold the door up to the closet and install the second end of the hinges to the inside of the closet. Open and close the closet a few times to ensure the door is installed properly.

8. Install the lock hinge on the front of the closet door and the side opposite of the original door hinges, when the door is closed. Use the screwdriver and 1/4-inch screws to install the lock hinge. Insert the lock into the hinge when you want to lock the closet.

9. Spray the entire outside surface area of the closet with water repellent spray. Give the entire closet at least one coat to ensure that the plywood can repel water during a rainstorm. If you do not apply the repellent, the plywood will absorb the water and eventually the plywood will become weak.
