Construct A Loft Bed

Construct a Loft Bed

A loft bed is a great space saver for a small bedroom or dorm. In fact, it can double as a desk or closet. For younger children or college students, a loft bed is a great choice. The loft bed even allows for added floor and storage space. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Build a box out of the 2-by-6-by-8 boards. Make sure the box accommodates the size of the mattress; your box should be slightly larger. For a standard twin (38 by 76 inches), the longer side should measure 78 inches, while the shorter side should measure 37 inches. Lay out the box and allow the longer ends to overlap the shorter ends. Screw together using 3-inch screws.

2. Cover the box with the heavy plywood. Cut to fit and attach at 2-foot intervals, with 1 5/8-inch screws. Sand the rough spots until smooth. Your mattress will lie on top of the box. Flip over the box and test how well the mattress fits.

3. Lay out the posts and draw a line across all four. This is done to show where the bottom of your box will be placed. Allow enough clearance (at least 3 feet) between the top of the mattress and the ceiling. Drill holes through the posts as well as halfway into the corresponding spots on the box.

4. Fasten the posts to the box using the lag bolts. First, attach the ones that will go against the wall. Next, raise the box. Have a helper support the box while you screw the last two posts on.

5. Use the finished boards to attach headers and footers. Stagger these along the inside and outside of the posts to allow for a built-in ladder. Space them so you can run a long board against the wall and under the bed. Measure the appropriate height for a desk, if desired. Install a light on the wall. There will be plenty of room for a small office chair.
