Organize A Room Without Buying Any Materials

Organize a room with items you already have.

Organizing a cluttered room can give it a fresh new look, but finding a place for everything doesn't mean that you have to buy new materials for storing or displaying your possessions. Use your imagination. You'll be surprised at the creative ways you can use everyday items you already have at home to organize any room in the house. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Start organizing a room by decluttering. Use empty boxes, laundry baskets and plastic grocery store bags to sort and purge the clutter. Professional home organizers usually suggest having at least three containers to sort out things you want to keep, things you want to donate or give away, and things you can throw away. Chances are you have some empty cardboard boxes that you saved "just in case" and now you can use them for this sorting process. Also, use up your plastic grocery store bags to throw away discarded items instead of buying extra garbage bags.

2. Use your newly freed-up space after purging to neatly organize the things you use daily or want to display prominently. Keep pens and pencils organized in your home office, for example, in a cute coffee cup that's been sitting unused in your cupboard. Look for creative and attractive ways to use newly available space on bookcase shelves, such as displaying some favorite framed photographs or small sculpture alongside a row of books. If you have any empty baskets that once held floral arrangements or food gifts, use them on your uncluttered desk to sort the mail or hold often-used notebooks or reference books.

3. Get creative with sturdy, plastic kitty litter containers and eliminate the need to buy plastic totes. If you don't have a cat, ask a cat-lover friend if you can have some of her empties. Kitty litter containers are perfect for organizing and storing just about anything, from office supplies, to kids' toys, to software CDs, to small clothing accessories and more. Close the lid to keep the items dust-free. In the bathroom, for example, a kitty litter container makes a great place to keep extra rolls of toilet paper or cleaning supplies. You can decorate kitty litter containers by wrapping them in gift wrap or peel-and-stick shelving to coordinate with the colors and style of the room.

4. Keep purses or tote bags with broken straps and use them to organize and protect "soft" items, such as lingerie, scarves or hosiery, in your bedroom. The bags can be placed in dresser drawers or stored on closet shelves. If the purse still has a strap, hang it on a hook in your closet.

5. Recycle those old cookie tins and empty coffee cans as whimsical decorative storage for organizing the room you use for your favorite hobby. For example, containers with lids are perfect for sewing items, craft supplies for scrapbooking, art brushes and paints, and stained glass tools. Egg cartons also make great organizers for beads and other jewelry findings. Even those old plastic food containers that are cracked or have lost their lids can become instant organizers in just about any room in the house.
