Design The Perfect Sewing Room

Designing your dream sewing room will ensure you make the most out of the space.

Those who like to sew know how much space this hobby can take up. From sewing machines, to measuring tables to dress forms and notions, the equipment and materials you need to sew many projects can cause you to need a room completely devoted to this task. An organized, clutter-free space is best for completing your sewing projects. To design the perfect sewing room that meets your needs, you have to understand how you most want to use the space.

Instructions

1. Make clear delineations of space in your room. To keep your space organized and the design inspired, remove any unnecessary furniture or knick knacks from your room. Create a space for your sewing machines and equipment, notions, fabrics, patterns, dress forms and any other items.

2. Find surfaces for your sewing projects. You will need a table to rest your sewing machine on, as well as a large table to measure and cut your fabric. If your space is limited, this table might need to be collapsible.

3. Organize your notions into storage bins with multiple small compartments. Clear drawers will allow you to see inside your drawers so you can easily find what you’re looking for. Otherwise, labels on the outside of the drawers are sufficient. Separate your buttons, needles, hook and eye clasps, zippers and other pieces.

4. Arrange your threads and bobbins on spool racks. This makes them accessible and easy to find. If you organize by color, they will be even easier to grab in a pinch. To save tabletop space, try mounting your spool rack on the wall. This will create the effect of a colorful art piece and save you surface room.

5. Use fabric as decoration. To find the fabrics you need, don’t just stuff them away in trunks. Roll up your pieces and arrange them on open shelving. Organize by color or material. Decorate your shelving with scrap pieces of material for a fun, crafty look.

6. Allow room for pieces that inspire you. For many, sewing is more than a way to make utilitarian pieces, it is a place to create art. To make the most of your time in this room, decorate with motivational quotes, pictures of your favorite sewn pieces or pictures of the one you love.
