Organizing Small Closet Spaces

Containers inside a closet.

You need only a couple of hours to transform your small closet. Even the tiniest of spaces can be made to seem much bigger with clever storage solutions, and it does not have to cost a fortune or involve tricky assembly. Getting ready in the morning will be much easier -- and more fun -- when you have a well-organized closet. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Take everything out of your closet and place it on the bed or floor. Put unwanted items in a box for charity. Be ruthless. Give away anything you haven't worn for six months. This will free up valuable closet space an make organizing easier.

2. Invest in multi-use hangers, which save space by letting you hang items of clothing, ties, belts and accessories on one hanger. Purchase good quality wood hangers, which help maintain the shape of your clothes.

3. Hang accessory bags and shoe racks on your closet door to free up inside space. Fit shoe shelves inside the bottom of your closet if you do not want to hang your shoes on the door.

4. Separate shelves in your closet with shelf dividers or storage containers to keep similar items together. Place small items like hosiery and undergarments in an airtight container to keep moths at bay. Transparent plastic boxes allow you to see immediately what is inside, avoiding the need to rummage around searching for a particular item.

5. Double your closet space with a closet doubler, provided your standard closet does not have a top shelf.

6. Store items you use most often within easy reach. Store seasonal items up high or some place other than your closet, such as in a zippered storage box under the bed.

7. Arrange your clothes to make finding what you want easier. Organize clothing by color or occasion (formal wear, sportswear, etc.)
